Year 2019 will mark the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Finland. The centennial will be celebrated in both countries with abundance of events and projects related to the cultural heritage and relations of the two countries.
The amount of planned events is growing constantly, but already now it is clear that the year will witness the largest cultural exchange activity between Japan and Finland ever. In Japan, the audience will be able to enjoy several touring exhibitions from Finland ranging from the Moomins to Alvar Aalto and from ceramic art to Finnish female painters, just to mention some.
In relation to music, several celebratory concerts and tours will be organized, including the first ever visit to Finland of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra lead by maestro Pietari Inkinen, followed by celebratory concerts of the orchestra in Tokyo and Yokohama. In addition, highlights of the cultural program include new movie premiers, book launches and a large variety of other events connected to Finland and Japan. As the establishment of the diplomatic relations 100 years ago is setting the framework for the celebrations, also official high level visits between the two countries are to be expected.
To help the audience in Japan to follow and take part in the festivities, the Embassy of Finland in Tokyo – together with its partners Business Finland, the Finnish Institute in Japan and the Finnish Chamber of Commerce in Japan – has launched an official diplomatic anniversary website in the domain www.japanfinland100.jp In the spirit of openness and mutual friendship, anyone organizing an event or project in Japan related to the anniversary is invited to join the official program by making an application through the website.
Please join us in celebrating the 100 years of Finnish-Japanese friendship!
